Camera Blimp LDB

A comfortable and efficient camera blimp tailor-made for your camera and at a reasonable price.

To avoid costly and cumbersome silenced boxes for theater reportage, in order to avoid inefficient protections , we have found an effective solution especially tailored for you.
On the market at the moment there are basically two ways to soundproof a camera:

The system described above, with its more or less advanced variants, is based on closing the camera inside a rigid casing provided with a front tube  containing  the lens and a transparent window on the back.
In general, these systems only allow to control the camera shutter without giving the possibility to freely adjust shutter speed and aperture. From an acoustic point of view they offer a great results, but they have a huge flaw: their cost starts in fact from 1,000 Euro up.

To make a blimper acoustically efficient it is essential to avoid that there be any interruptions along the casing that contains the camera and the lens, as well as choosing a high performance sound absorbing material.
For example, the camera muzzle of the kind shown in the figure above , personally tested by us, were found to be almost useless, for various reasons.
If it is not a full frame body, the camera moves around inside the blimp. In the above case the inside had to be filled with custom made materials, placed in such a manner as to center the camera body with reference to the view-finder.
The covering surrounding  the lens was useless, since the noise is produced by the mirror and then, starting from the pentaprism, it radiates to the lens. The connection between the camera and lens must be a single pieces and not two halves.
After various attempts, I had to face the fact that the blimp was useless and I sent it back!


After thinking about the problem, having examined various possible shapes and solutions and overcoming a couple of failures, I reached the results I wanted, creating  an item similar to a bagpipe, which I then tested in the theater: the results were really good!

Among its advantages: it was composed of materials that do not release any dust; once folded it took up very little space.

On the contrary : it was made of a material a little too expensive;, the lens and the camera body had to be entered separately; my hands would  sweat a lot while inside.

However, I knew I was moving in the right direction and I finally found a different kind of material.

Among the advantages of the new model: lightness; being able to enter the camera body and lens already assembled; easy inserting hands inside to handle the camera.

To determine objectively the effect of our blimper we performed measurements with appropriate equipment and above are the results

The data show a good reduction in the high frequencies which are also those which deviate from background noise and are therefore the most audible. On medium and low frequencies , the improvement is practically irrelevant, but also the difference with the background noise decreases, thus making this part of the click unable to reach the ear of the viewer during a theatrical performance.

To further improve the blimp we tried to weigh down the housing with the material used for the previous model.

The addition of the latter leads to a slight improvement in high frequencies, with a noticeable drop in the handling of the blimp. We therefore decided not to proceed further in making it heavier , considering that must be light enough as to be used even without a tripod and it must be easy to rotate the camera in a vertical position.

This is the model I currently use in theaters.

Working with my wife and photographing often together during dance performances made it necessary to avoid bothering the audience with two photographers on the sides of the stage.
Now with our camera blimper we no longer risk being insulted by the public.
We can comfortably shoot with a tripod but also, when we want to, disconnect our cameras and move closer to the edge of the stage.
The public is not bothered by our presence and after the show we leave the theater holding our heads high!
Changing  card and battery take just about the same time as without camera blimp. The lens remains comfortable to handle and the same for the camera, both in horizontal or vertical position. With a little training, It is even possible to mount a teleconverter, without removing the camera from the blimper.


My satisfaction in achieving such results convinced me to produce blimps, so as to offer them to other photographers who wish to solve, once and for all, the problem of camera noise in theaters.
